Common Symptoms of Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism symptoms often develop gradually over the years, and the severity can vary from person to person. One of the challenges is that many GPs only test for TSH levels, and if those come back 'normal,' it's easy to think everything is fine.

  • Always Feeling Cold: If you’re always freezing, especially in your hands and feet, it could be a sign your thyroid isn't working properly.

  • Hair Thinning and Dry Skin: Hair falling out more than usual, brittle nails, and skin that's constantly dry and flaky are typical signs of low thyroid levels.

  • Brain Fog: Feeling mentally slow, forgetful, or having trouble concentrating might be linked to thyroid issues.

  • Mood Swings: Depression, anxiety, and unexpected mood swings can often be connected to an underactive thyroid.

How The Thyroid Gland Works

The pituitary gland (in your brain) monitors your hormone levels and sends a signal (TSH) to the thyroid when more hormones are needed.

The thyroid responds by producing two important hormones: T4 and T3. T4 needs to be converted into the active hormone T3 for your body to function properly.
